Pat Oden's email message about her Hemphill TX Shuttle experience.

As you probably have already read or seen on TV, the search has been called off, exactly 12 days after the shuttle exploded over East Texas.  NASA, the FBI, the Army and State Troopers left here Thursday evening.  The EPA and Forest Service are continuing to search although it seems NASA was satisfied they found the most important items in and around Hemphill.  Most if not all of the astronauts remains were found here also.  One of our local Pastors, along with the FBI and local mortician were present whenever remains were found, and the Pastor held a memorial on sight for each astronaut.  Very touching.

(Pat cont.) One story I will share with you is what the Captain of the Salvation Army told us, he said "I have been working for 10 years on all kinds of disasters and never before were we treated with such love and caring that you folks here in Hemphill".  This is the kind of thing we heard for nearly two weeks from everyone of the searchers from the FBI to the U. S. Army.  As I said before it made our hearts soar to hear this about our community. 

Many of us gave cakes and cookies to the men leaving.  The two State Troopers started calling me "the cookie lady" and I gave each of them cake and cookies to take home with them.  They gave me their cards and we will keep in touch too.  One was from San Antonio and the other from Houston;

 We were devastated as was the rest of the world about this sad tragedy but we in East Texas are so thankful that it was here and not over Dallas, Houston or some other large city.  No one was hurt which was a miracle and we thank God for this. 

It has been my pleasure to tell you all what I saw first hand as I know you are all were interested.  I have made many new friends along the way but most of all I was touched and surprised that so many of you passed along my information to your friends and family and I have received many e mails from people I didn't even know.  Thank you so much for e mailing me and I hope to keep in contact with all of you it would mean so much to me to hear from you again.
